Patriot Jack Shimizu  1940-2015 With deepest regrets to announce the recent passing of Patriot Jack Shimizu, MOPH's outstanding Leader in Guam since 2002, passed away on June 5th, 2015. He was 75. Jack was a Life Member of Chapter 1315 and had a passion for serving the members and following the principles of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He organized and established the three chapters in Guam and the Department of Asia Pacific. He served several terms as Chapter Commander, Chapter Adjutant, Chapter Service officer, Department Commander, Department Senior Vice Commander, Department Welfare Officer and Department Service Officer. He also served two years as Region VI Commander. Jack was in the United States Navy for 28 years, from 1957 to 1985, and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer. His tours of duty included amphibious ships, guided missile cruisers and the Navy Military Personnel Command in Washington DC. Jack had two tours in Vietnam, the first in Danang and the second in the Mekong Delta where he was wounded in 1970 while assigned to Mobile Riverine Force Rivron 13 during an intense phase of the war. After his Navy Career, Jack went to work for the Government of Guam, retiring after holding the important positions of Chief of Police and later Director of Prisons. Always positive and upbeat, Patriot Shimizu's unique leadership skills, wisdom, and warm personality will be missed by all. The National Commander and all of MOPH extend its deepest sympathies to the family of Patriot Shimizu.

Salute and Pay Respects to the Flag of the United States of America On June 14, we pause to salute and pay respects to the Flag of the United States of America.  It was on that date in 1977 that the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to adopt the flag, at the same time that it created "the American Continental Army." For Americans, the "Stars and Stripes" have become the symbol of all that is good about the country we love and call home.  The country that has provided us with the freedoms of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness  -- Those very freedoms that have been won and protected with the blood of America's sons and daughters on the battlefields of our enemies, foreign and domestic.  For those of us who were willing to fight and die for it, we share a special reverence and sense of patriotism whenever and wherever we see the American Flag fly. It is to the flag that we pledge our allegiance, but have you really ever considered the words that we recite, just as we were taught to memorize so many years ago? "I pledge allegiance to the flag" - Whose stripes symbolize the original 13 Colonies. "Of the United States of America" - Symbolized by the 50 Stars on a field of blue.. "And to the Republic for which it stands." - Where the power is in the hands of its citizens." "One Nation, under God" - Where each has the freedom to worship their own God.  "Indivisible" - Where we stand together for our ideals, inseparable. Happy Birthday US Army!

Military Order of the Purple Heart Salutes its Army Veterans on the 240th Birthday of the US Army June 14, 1775 marks the date that the Continental Congress, voting in secret session, reached the momentous decision to establish a "Continental Army."   Because of the secrecy of the meeting, the records indicate only that the Congress agreed to undertake the raising of ten companies of riflemen, whose enlistment would be for one year only, and appointed a committee (including Washington and Schuyler) to draft rules and regulations for the government of the army.  Until then, loosely organized militias and individual patriots bore the brunt of the opposition to British occupation of the colonies.   Many of the initial units were formed from the estimated 10,000 men that made up existing New England troops, plus another 5,000 men from New York and Connecticut who were defending various points in New York.    This year, we celebrate 240 years of selfless service to the nation. "Selfless service is at the core of what it means to be a Soldier - putting the welfare of others ahead of oneself. The willingness of our Soldiers to place themselves in harm's way and to protect our nation's freedoms is what makes us the greatest Armed Forces in the world.  The men and women who have made up the US Army have served proudly, faithfully, and selflessly for 240 years, and remain steadfast in their commitment to protect and defend until today."   In the 240 years since the establishment of the US Army, it is estimated that more than 1.4 million Americans gave their lives, plus another 1.5 million men and women who were wounded in combat against the enemies of the United States of America.  This selfless service and willingness to sacrifice one's own life to defend our nation and the freedoms that all American's enjoy is what marks those who proudly wear the Purple Heart medal as true American Patriots.
